Super Mario World was released in 1991 for the SNES. With the success of Super Mario Bros. 3, and the launch of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Mario made a massive leap into the 16-bit world with this game. This game was a launch title for the SNES and releases in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in North America.

The Sega Genesis was eating Nintendo's market share with classic hits like Altered Beast and Sonic the Hedgehog, so Nintendo decided to fight back with a sequel to the astounding Super Mario Bros. 3. Considered Super Mario Bros. 4, Super Mario World was a launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and while it helped the Super Nintendo raise sales, it also attracted astronomical praises, awards, and critical acclaim from reviewers.
